Spring Training Roster

Troy PattonNow that the results of Monday’s Photo Day are up on Getty Images, we might as well take a closer look at the Spring Training roster, in numerical order (of course!). Click below to see who’s wearing what.

#1 Brian Roberts - This would be his eighth season as #1, though Al Bumbry is still in the lead with 14 seasons as a player and coach.

#2 Luis Hernandez - No change from his 2007 debut. He’s the first full-time shortstop to wear #2 since Bobby Bonner in the early 1980s.

#3 Freddie Bynum - After wearing #57 last Spring, “Boom Boom” upgraded on Opening Day.

#6 Melvin Mora - This is season number nine in #6 for Melvin, gaining ground on Paul Blair’s twelve seasons in that number.

#9 Scott Moore - Scott switches from #43 to something more closely resembling an infielder’s number.

#10 Adam Jones - The new kid fills Miguel Tejada’s jersey. Can he take his place in the batters’ box, too?

#12 Brandon Fahey - Hoping to crack the O’s roster for a third season, he will have logged the most time in #12 since Roberto Alomar, believe it or not.

#13 Tike Redman - If anyone out there is looking to start a fan club, might I suggest “We Like Tike”?

#15 Kevin Millar - I’ve heard that his truck has “ONE-FIVE” customed printed all over it. Does anyone have a picture?

#16 Jay Payton - Has shown a preference for #44 in the past. Hopefully the O’s are keeping it out of circulation in memory of Elrod Hendricks.

#17 Aubrey Huff - As mentioned previously, he switches from #19 to honor Joe Kennedy.

#19 Ben Davis - Nonroster invitee wore #13 as a catcher with the Mariners and Padres from 2000-2004.

#21 Nick Markakis - So far, he’s lived up to his spot on the numerical pecking order (between #20 Frank Robinson and #22 Jim Palmer).

#23 Rocky Cherry - A switch from #38, which he wore late last year after being traded from the Cubs.

#24 Guillermo Quiroz - A catcher in #24 just seems right.

#25 Luis Terrero - Wore #28 in his first go-round with the O’s in 2006.

#26 Chris Roberson - Long-shot outfielder gets Boog’s old number. That just seems odd.

#27 Jim Hoey - This would be his third number in three years (#47 in 2006 and #39 in 2007).

#28 Danys Baez - This one’s not seeing any action this year, thanks to Tommy John surgery.

#29 Adam Loewen - In 2008, he’ll have logged more time in #29 than anyone since Jeff Ballard.

#30 Luke Scott - He’s worn this number since he debuted with the Astros in 2005.

#31 Jay Gibbons - Jay is the only Oriole to wear two different numbers for three seasons each: #25 (2001-2003) and #31 (2004-present).

#32 Jamie Walker - He carried #32 over from the Tigers (2002-2006) to the O’s.

#34 Fernando Cabrera - Wore #23 last year. Early injury problems hurt his already slim chances of making this year’s team.

#35 Greg Aquino - Becomes the fifth Oriole pitcher to wear this number since Mike Mussina’s departure in 2000.

#37 Chris Ray - His presence means that new first base coach (and former Birds outfielder) John Shelby is wearing an unfamiliar number. Read on to find out which number!

#40 Daniel Cabrera - Switching from #35 after four seasons.

#41 Steve Trachsel - Reclaims the number he wore last season before a late trade to the Cubs.

#43 Troy Patton - Hopefully he’ll make us forget Sidney Ponson; of course, starting camp with a balky shoulder isn’t a good sign.

#45 Dennis Sarfate - Previously wore this number in his 2006 MLB debut with Milwaukee.

#46 Jeremy Guthrie - No O’s position player has worn #46 since Butch Davis in 1989. Jeremy continues this tradition.

#49 Hayden Penn - The Orioles seem to have kept #49 open for Hayden, who hasn’t pitched in the bigs since 2006.

#51 George Sherrill - The potential new closer couldn’t get his old #52.

#52 Jon Leicester - Oddly enough, he wore #51 with the Cubs (2004-2005). Couldn’t he switch with George?

#53 Chad Bradford - The submariner wore #52 last Spring, and jumped at the chance to claim his preferred #53 when previous occupant Todd Williams was left off of the Opening Day roster.

#54 Lance Cormier - Former Braves pitcher takes up the number just vacated by the firing of ex-Braves pitching coach Leo Mazzone.

#55 Ramon Hernandez - Entering his third season as #55, which would be tops among all O’s to wear the number.

#56 Brian Burres - Of the six O’s players to wear this number, only Brian and Mike Oquist (1993-1995) have not worn another number at some point in their tenure.

#57 Garrett Olson - Garrett won’t have to do much to become the best Oriole to sport #57.

#58 Matt Wieters - Last year’s No. 1 pick wore #32 at Georgia Tech, but has to earn his way to a lower number in the pros.

#59 Craig Anderson - This Australian lefty has a mostly impressive minor league record, but has never appeared in the bigs in nine professional seasons.

#60 Ryan Bukvich - We’re definitely into the nonroster players now, but this is actually a lower number than Ryan wore with the White Sox last year (#63).

#62 Radhames Liz - Downgrades from last year’s #58. To look at it another way though, this is a step up from last Spring’s #74.

#63 Roberto Novoa - Last seen wearing #44 with the Cubs in 2006.

#64 Jim Johnson - Pitcher who made blink-and-you’ll-miss-him appearances in Baltimore in 2006 (as #47) and 2007 (#59).

#65 Omir Santos - Just a warm body to catch for the bevy of pitchers in the early goings of camp.

#66 Mike Costanzo - The young power hitter would probably pitch a few innings if the team asked him. Gotta love that.

#69 Oscar Salazar - Hasn’t sniffed the majors since a 2002 cup of coffee with the Tigers (as #40).

#70 Eider Torres - Wore #3 for Norfolk last year, which is considerably less than #70.

#71 Bob McCrory - For a young pitcher who’s projected to get the callup later this year, this is a bulky number.

#72 Fredy Deza - Former catcher Robert Machado (2003-2004) is the only player to wear this number for the Birds in-season. Fredy’s not likely to be the second.

#73 Chris Heintz - Minor league veteran catcher has seen a bit of time with the Twins (2005-2007), wearing #41.

#74 Zachary Dillon - Yet another nonroster catcher.

#75 Esteban Yan - Another ex-Oriole looking for a second run with the team. He wore #43 for the O’s in 1996 and #56 in 1997.

#76 Chris Tillman - The 19-year-old righty could be the steal of the Bedard trade.

#77 Randor Bierd - Rule 5 reliever from the Tigers’ organization could make the Opening Day roster.

#78 Matt Albers - One of approximately 250 candidates for the fifth slot in the starting rotation. He wore #37 with the Astros (2006-2007).

#81 Ryan Keefer - His number matches his birth year.

#82 Kam Mickolio - The towering (6′9″) righty has some control problems, and he also has the honor of the highest uni number in camp.

And if you’re still with me here, let’s take a look at the coaching staff.

#11 Juan Samuel - The third-base coach wore this number for the last few years of his playing career, when he was a Blue Jay (1996-1998).

#36 Alan Dunn - Dave Trembley’s bullpen coach inherits John Parrish’s old number.

#38 John Shelby - With Chris Ray wearing his old number, “T-Bone” jumps up one digit.

#39 Rick Kranitz - The new pitching guru will sport the same number he wore during his stay with the Marlins.

#47 Dave Trembley - Dave has the highest uniform number of any O’s manager in history.

#48 Terry Crowley - The Crow kicks off his tenth straight season in #48.

#50 Dave Jauss - Most recently wore #46 as Dodgers bench coach (2006-2007).
